[Chrono Trigger Novel - Episode 65] A Borrowed Smile

Dust vanished from the canopy in the light of their passage.

Marle held the bundle against her chest and watched the yellow sky turn blue. Sunlight lay on the sea. Every roof had its own color. As the Epoch descended, she could distinguish people walking between the fairground tents. Someone offered a steaming skewer to a companion.

People could still eat things that hot.

She closed her lips at the thought. In the space of a few days, she kept forgetting what she had once taken for granted. Lucca landed in a clearing away from the square. The canopy opened onto the smell of grass. Marle's clothes still smelled of metal from the distant future.

Magus climbed out last. A passerby slowed at the sight of his scythe, then hurried on. Before the path narrowed, Lucca turned to him.

“Cover that, will you?”

He said nothing, but turned the blade inside his cloak.

The bell rang in the square.

Marle stopped. The same bell. Two children crouched where she had collided with Crono and dropped her pendant. They were drawing lines on the ground and arguing about who had stepped over one. She went around them.

Lucca did not speak. She studied the signs hanging from the tents. Someone lost a balloon and reached after it; Marle looked up too. Its thin string climbed into the sky. Beyond it, a dark shape hung over the distant horizon. It had reached this age as well. A man pointed, while his companion bought a sweet without looking.

Marle lowered her eyes to the tents.

Norstein Bekkler's name was written over one entrance. Inside, a head turned in midair. Two gloved hands appeared beside the smiling face. There was no body.

She almost stepped backward. But the hands held no weapons. They were applauding.

“Visitors! Whose face would you like to take away?”

“Crono's.”

His name escaped too quickly. Bekkler's smile did not change.

“That young man's doll? I don't generally hand out someone else's likeness when its owner isn't here. I'll make an exception today.”

Lucca stepped forward.

“What do we have to do?”

Forty Silver Points, followed by a game of imitation. Bekkler drew a circle in the air with one finger. They could have the doll even if they failed, but the longer they lasted, the less he would charge.

Marle opened the purse. Coins, but none of the fair's points. Lucca touched her hand.

“I know where.”

She led Marle across the square. A round machine swayed with its arms raised. A child ventured toward its feet until an adult caught him. Lucca watched the reach of its fist and handed Marle her bag.

“Gato. Beat him, and you win points.”

She stepped inside the line. The machine approached with a tuneful noise. As one arm extended, she ducked and slipped beneath its returning swing. A gunshot cracked. Sparks jumped from the rounded body. Soon the machine halted and sounded a ridiculous note of defeat.

The children laughed.

Lucca collected fifteen points and stepped back inside the line. This time a fist brushed the edge of her cap. She straightened it and opened the distance again. Marle closed her mouth on an unfinished cheer. After the third bout, sweat had gathered on Lucca's glasses. Before returning the bag, Marle wiped the moisture away with her sleeve.

“That'll do,” Lucca said.

Magus stood in the shade of a distant tent. His face gave no indication of what he thought of the spectacle.

Back at Bekkler's, they paid forty points. A small bell rang.

Crono walked out of the darkness.

Marle took a step. Lucca stopped her by catching her bag strap. His feet touched the floor, but no weight seemed to shift inside his boots. Not a strand of red hair stirred.

It was the doll.

Even the headband and the folds of his clothes were right. Searching for a difference, Marle came to the eyes. They faced her without recognizing her.

“Who's playing?”

Bekkler's hands fluttered between them. Before Lucca could volunteer, Marle slipped off her bag. She entrusted her with the egg as well.

“I will.”

She stood on the mark. Bekkler wagged a gloved finger: wait for the signal. Move too soon, and it would count against her.

The doll raised its left arm.

Marle lifted hers, then caught herself just before the bell. She lowered it a fraction and raised it again. Bekkler laughed, but did not stop the game.

The right arm next. Then both hands beside the face in a gesture of surprise. She watched the doll's fingertips. Remembering Crono as he had been would make her late. She had to watch the wood and cloth in front of her.

The doll held its stomach and laughed.

No sound came. Only its shoulders moved. Marle put her hands over her stomach and opened her mouth. Bekkler rang the bell again.

She had to pretend to laugh.

She bent, lifted the corners of her mouth, shook her shoulders. Her eyes burned. The doll had already moved on. It raised its right hand. She raised her left.

Two short chimes.

“And that's your lot!”

She lowered her arm. Salt touched her tongue. She did not want to find out whether she had bitten her lip or whether tears had reached it.

Bekkler named his price. Lucca counted out coins. Marle had not lasted to the end, but they could afford the charge. The final coin settled onto the floating palm.

“I'll send it to his house. Crono's house, mind. Don't collect the wrong face!”

The doll withdrew into the dark. Marle stopped herself from following. They would not be carrying it out of this tent. Lucca returned the bundle, and she took it in both hands.

Outside, someone asked whether the game had been fun. Marle pretended not to hear.

*

They visited a shop before going to the house. Marle bought ten new arrows and bound them with the two remaining in her quiver. Lucca replenished her ammunition and chose dry bandages and rope. They added thick cloth and a small parcel of food. The shopkeeper asked whether they were going far.

“Into the mountains,” Marle said. She did not say which ones.

At Crono's door, knocking took a long time. Magus stayed outside the fence. Lucca began to enter as she usually would, glanced at Marle, and withdrew her hand. In the end, Marle knocked. She felt the grain against her knuckles.

“It's open!”

The house smelled of a freshly cleaned floor. A little flag stirred by the window. Marle wiped the earth from her boots. On the stairs, the cat recognized Lucca and stood. Then it looked past them at the open door.

Crono's mother appeared upstairs.

“Lucca! And Marle. Come on up.”

One stair creaked. Lucca placed her foot on the edge of the next: the step of someone who knew which boards would speak. Marle followed, pressing the egg inside her clothes.

Crono stood in his room.

This time she did not stop. The doll was beside the desk. It looked more like him here than it had in the tent. The length of the bed and the height of the doorway made that face familiar.

His mother was folding clothes on the end of the bed.

“How is Crono?”

“He's…” Lucca began.

His mother looked up with a smile. Marle tightened her hand around the egg, then hurriedly loosened it.

“He's doing well.”

Marle could not look at her. Sunlight stretched across the floor beneath the window. Their travel-stained clothes looked pitiful in that brightness. His mother laid the folded garment on her knees.

“I hope he isn't making trouble for you. Tell him to behave himself.”

Lucca nodded. Marle could do nothing. Trouble: she saw three people sent away from the palace, and light closing behind them. He had not returned, but his mother was here, folding his clothes.

“Ma'am,” Lucca said.

“Yes?”

Lucca closed her mouth once before looking toward the desk.

“May we borrow the doll?”

His mother glanced at it, a little surprised. Someone had just sent it over, she said. Finding that face in his empty room had given her quite a start. She laughed. Marle tried to laugh with her and gave up.

“Of course. Mind you don't drop it.”

Lucca took its shoulders. Marle supported its legs. It was lighter than she expected. Weight that would have shifted differently in a person's body hung obediently between their arms. As they turned its head clear of the doorframe, its cheek brushed Marle's sleeve.

There was no warmth.

They covered the face with cloth. His mother held the door. The cat watched from the bottom of the stairs. Looking down at it, Marle almost missed a step. Lucca stopped with her.

“Slowly.”

Her voice was very quiet.

At the front door, his mother called after them.

“Take care of yourselves.”

Marle bowed her head. Even after the door had closed, she did not put down what she was carrying. Magus stepped away from the fence. He looked at the covered face, then at Lucca.

Marle did not hand the doll to him. She and Lucca carried it all the way to the clearing. They laid it on the cockpit floor between the seats and secured it with rope. Twice, Marle checked that its folded arms would not catch beneath the canopy.

Lucca took the central seat.

Marle tried the words she had heard in the bedroom. He's doing well. She closed her teeth before any sound escaped. The cloth around the egg was warm now. Her own warmth.

The Epoch rose. Crono's roof grew smaller among the others. Marle watched until she could no longer distinguish it. Only then did she turn and check that the rope at her feet had not come loose.

[Chrono Trigger Novel - Episode 64] Time Yet to Open

First came the little light at the End of Time.

Marle stayed seated after the canopy opened. Three figures waited beneath that light. Ayla stepped away from the railing and raised a hand. Robo stood behind her. Frog took two steps toward them and stopped.

Magus was the first onto the footboard.

Metal rang. Frog had drawn part of the Masamune from its sheath. Light caught the exposed blade. Magus halted. Between them, Ayla slowly lowered her hand.

“Why is he here?”

Frog spoke to Marle without looking away from Magus. She pushed herself upright. She would have to explain. Lucca turned from the controls.

“He came with us.”

“I can see that.”

Marle climbed down and opened her mouth, unable to choose her first words. Looking at Magus, she remembered Schala reaching toward him on the palace floor. To explain that, she would have to start with what they had heard at the cape.

Ayla peered inside the Epoch.

“Crono?”

Even after she had seen the empty seats, she stepped around the craft to look behind it.

Marle called to her.

“Look at me.”

Ayla turned.

“Crono couldn't come.”

Ayla's arms fell to her sides. Frog looked at Marle for the first time. A low sound began inside Robo's neck and stopped.

Lucca climbed down beside her. She did not put a hand on Marle's shoulder, but they stood close enough for their clothes to touch.

“Lavos woke in the Ocean Palace,” Marle said, looking at a seam in the floor. “We tried to stop him. We couldn't. We couldn't get up. Only Crono—”

She drew breath to finish. Ayla came forward.

“Hurt? We go get him.”

Marle shook her head.

Ayla stopped.

“He stood in front of us. He went toward Lavos.”

Saying it aloud brought the floor too close to her face. Marle struggled to keep her knees straight.

Lucca finished for her.

“There wasn't even a body.”

No one answered. There was no wind beyond the railing. Marle could not remember the place being so quiet.

Ayla caught her arm. The grip was so strong that Marle leaned toward it. Ayla did not apologize or let go. After a while, her fingers loosened a little.

Frog slid his sword back into its sheath. The final click came late.

“And you two?”

Lucca nodded as though to say they were all right, but did not speak. Robo knelt, bringing the light of his face below Marle's.

“Would you like to sit?”

She felt that if she sat, she might never stand again. She covered Ayla's hand with her own.

“I need to ask something.”

The old man approached from beside the lamp. As he fetched his cane from the railing, Marle realized he must already have heard. He looked at the empty Epoch. His lips moved.

He hummed a tune she did not know. Before the phrase was finished, he stopped and rested both hands on his cane.

“That boy…”

He did not search for more words. He waited.

“We're looking for the Guru of Time,” Marle said. “Gaspar. Someone told us he might know how to recover lost time.”

The old man glanced beyond her. Magus stood outside the lamplight. He did not approach.

“What would you do first, if he returned?”

Marle understood whom he meant, but not the question. She had never thought that far.

“I would…”

She would catch his arm. See whether he stayed when she held him. Say his name and look into his face. None of those seemed like the answer the old man wanted.

“I wouldn't let him stand there alone again.”

He studied her. She waited for him to say that was enough. Instead, he rubbed the handle of his cane.

“Traveling through time and restoring the dead are different things.”

“I know.”

Too quick. She bit her lip.

“No. I don't. That's why I came to ask.”

His hand stopped moving.

“There is very little I can do.”

Marle waited. Nothing followed. Something that had risen inside her slowly settled again. She released Ayla's hand and stepped back. She wanted to ask Magus why he had sent them here. But he had never claimed to know the way himself.

Lucca turned with her.

“Wait.”

The old man reached inside his clothes. What he brought out was rounded, narrower at one end. A faint pattern caught the lamplight on its surface. Marle went closer.

“Hold out your hands.”

She offered both. The object weighed less than she expected. It was neither warm nor cold, and she could find no seam in its surface.

“A Time Egg. You might call it the Chrono Trigger.”

A small egg is offered at the End of Time - RPGClassics

Marle paid less attention to its name than to its weight. It felt light enough to break if she closed her fingers too firmly.

“What do I do with it?”

“It holds a possibility. Whether you can open it depends on you. I can promise no more than that.”

Lucca bent close without reaching for a tool.

“Does someone know how it works?”

“Ask the maker of your ship.”

Marle's hands went rigid. She remembered Belthasar's empty chair, and the Nu saying that his body no longer moved.

“But he's already…”

Lucca stopped. They looked at each other. He had left his memories and the instructions for his work. The Nu had told them so.

Magus stepped into the light. He looked from the old man's face to the egg.

“Gaspar.”

It did not sound like a question now.

The old man looked up.

“It has taken a long time.”

Magus's mouth tightened. He came no closer. Marle cupped the egg between them. She almost asked why Gaspar had never told them his name. There were other questions she needed answered first.

Lucca found a dry cloth in her bag. Marle spread it around the egg. Her fingers missed the edge on the first attempt; Ayla held a corner for her. They folded it closed without tying a knot, leaving it easy to open again.

“Ayla come too.”

Marle looked at the Epoch. Three seats. Magus was looking toward it as well. Lucca spoke first.

“It could help to take someone who knew Belthasar. There might be something we missed. The three of us will go this time.”

Ayla said nothing. She looked at the cloth in Marle's hands, then at Magus. Marle took her hand once and released it.

Frog stepped into Magus's path.

“This does not erase what you have done.”

Magus looked down at him. Frog kept his hand away from his sword.

“For now, the boy comes first. When you return, you and I will have words.”

“Then wait.”

Frog's jaw moved. He stepped aside. Robo checked the footboard and withdrew. Ayla remained beside the railing.

Marle sat with the bundle against her chest. She had no attention left to spare for the stranger beside her. Just before the canopy closed, she raised a hand to Ayla.

Ayla raised hers. This time she kept it there.

The future sky was low and yellow.

Lucca found the dome's rounded roof and descended slowly. Something scraped inside the craft as the wings folded. She checked the instruments before opening the canopy. Marle tucked the egg securely against her and climbed out.

The air was cold here too, but it smelled nothing like the village wind. Rust and old dust caught on her tongue. Broken fragments crumbled underfoot. Magus silently studied the horizon.

Inside the Keeper's Dome, the chair stood where it always had. The coat still hung there. Marle softened her footsteps as she passed.

Her pendant opened the sealed door. At the end of the corridor, the blue Nu raised its head. Its small feet moved at even intervals. Lucca stepped over the threshold and waited.

Marle unfolded the cloth.

“Gaspar gave us this.”

The Nu stopped, its eyes settling on the egg. The silence lasted long enough for Marle to extend her hands a little farther.

“We want to bring our friend back.”

Something clicked inside the Nu's throat.

“You must go to Death Peak.”

Lucca opened her bag and spread out a sheet of paper, finding a blank patch clear of the water damage.

“Can we reach it from here?”

“Yes. But there is something you must prepare first.”

The Nu looked from Marle's face to her shoulders, then to her feet. She did not step away.

“You need a doll that looks exactly like the person you wish to recover.”

Lucca's hand stopped above the paper.

“Would matching clothes be enough?”

“It must resemble him closely enough to take his place.”

Marle looked down at the egg. Even if it could take them to Crono, the place where he had stood would still be there. The Nu had given them no further explanation yet. She decided to find the doll first. If she waited until she understood everything, she might never leave this corridor.

“Do you know someone who can make one?”

“Norstein Bekkler. For such a task, he would be the man. Look where there is a fair.”

Marle raised her head.

That was the way home.

Lucca looked up from the paper. For a moment Marle could almost hear the Millennial Fair in this quiet passage: voices calling across the square, people moving between the tents. She remembered her own feet following Crono that day. She had not needed to ask where they were going.

“We'll come back when we have it.”

The Nu nodded and returned to its place. Magus watched it go. He seemed about to speak, so Marle waited. He only turned toward the room with the hanging coat.

She wrapped the egg again. Folding the corners in the same order, she found that her hands no longer fumbled. Lucca made space inside her bag. Marle shook her head.

“I'll carry it.”

Before they went outside, she called Lucca's name.

“If we go home, we'll see his mother.”

Lucca did not ask whose mother she meant.

Marle tried to rehearse. When the question came—where was Crono?—what would she say first? She could not say she did not know. She could not promise he would be back soon.

Lucca held the door open.

“I'll go with you.”

Marle nodded and crossed the threshold. Cold wind lifted a corner of the cloth. She pressed it down with her fingers.

The egg had not opened. It was still there against her chest.

[Chrono Trigger Novel - Episode 63] The Name at the Cape

Marle took small sips before setting the bowl down. Even then, a mouthful remained. She knew she only had to tip it a little farther. Her hands would not do it.

Lucca stood first.

They left the Epoch at the village and took the path north through frozen grass. Nearer the sea, the snow thinned to patches of bare rock. Marle adjusted the bow on her back. Two arrows knocked together in her quiver.

Lucca stopped ahead of her.

A black cloak stirred at the edge of the cape. The man beneath it faced the sea. His scythe lay beside his feet, its point resting against the rock, unmoved by the wind.

Marle walked closer.

“Where's Schala?”

He did not turn.

“You got out too. She sent you out. Did you see her afterward?”

His cloak wrapped around his legs and loosened. At last he turned his head slightly.

“No.”

Marle looked past him at the water. She had not expected him to promise that Schala was still somewhere out there. She had only wanted someone else to have seen her. Someone who knew what had happened just one moment after they left.

“She always sent everyone else to safety.”

Something in his words made Marle look back. It took her a moment to understand. He did not sound as though they had met in the palace.

Lucca climbed onto the rock, keeping several paces between them.

“You knew her before you became the Prophet?”

Magus turned fully toward them. His face looked thinner than it had in the Ocean Palace. Marle glanced from his scythe to his hands. His fingers were open.

“Janus,” he said. “Do you remember that child?”

Marle let go of her bow strap.

Blue hair. Feet that retreated before anyone came close. The boy calling for Schala without looking toward the other adults. While Marle remembered, the man waited.

“We're looking for him. He disappeared from Algetty with Melchior.”

Something shifted in Magus's eyes. She could not tell whether he was surprised or had found something he expected.

“I was that child.”

A stone rolled beneath Lucca's foot. Marle did not look toward the sound. She searched his face for the boy, but the shape of his eyes and ears would not fit the memory. She felt she needed some resemblance before she could believe him.

What returned instead was the moment Schala had reached him on the palace floor. He had looked up at her and fallen silent.

“You're Janus?”

He turned back toward the sea.

“On the day I remember, we were in the palace. Openings appeared in the floor. The Gurus vanished. My sister reached for me.”

My sister.

Marle closed her mouth. Those words, at least, hurt in the same place they had when the boy spoke them.

Magus did not raise a hand to show her. He kept looking at the water.

“I was drawn in before she could reach me. When I woke, there was a forest. No familiar trees. No familiar paths. The way back had closed.”

Lucca adjusted her glasses.

“The Janus we met stayed in Algetty. Schala left him with Melchior.”

“That is the day you saw.”

Lucca did not immediately argue. Marle could not say she understood it either. A grown man stood before her in the missing child's place, and yet she was no closer to knowing where they could look for that child.

“Where was the forest?” Lucca asked.

“In the lands of the Mystics, long before you entered my castle. I met Ozzie there.”

Marle remembered the castle stairs, corridors full of enemies, doors closing behind them. She tried to imagine Janus there and stopped. A boy had grown up. That did not change what had happened inside those walls.

“And you spent all that time trying to summon Lavos?”

“To kill him. I did not create him. I do not serve him.”

Lucca lifted her head. Magus was watching her.

“Had I completed the summoning that night, I could have faced him. You interfered. The opening twisted. I was returned to this age.”

Marle scarcely heard the accusation. Returned to this age: to a place where Schala lived and Janus was still a child. She pictured him walking through the palace beneath his hood. It was as though a door had opened, long after they had left the room.

“You could be a prophet because you knew what would happen,” Lucca said.

He did not deny it.

“I thought I could prepare this time.”

He picked up his scythe. Marle's shoulders tightened, but the blade did not turn toward them. He planted the shaft against the rock and rested his hand on it.

“Lavos took that from me too.”

Marle remembered darkness drawing his arms upward. She had wanted him to succeed. Then Crono had stood before the creature he had meant to kill, with the fallen people behind him.

Magus glanced at her face.

“Your friend misjudged his strength as well. That is what happens when you challenge something beyond you.”

Marle stepped forward.

“Stop.”

He stopped speaking, but he did not look away. She came closer. Lucca called her name. The rock beneath Marle's feet was wet.

“You were on the floor.”

She spoke slowly. Faster, and she would lose her breath.

“All of us were. Crono stood in front of you too.”

The hand on the scythe remained still.

“And that's what you have to say?”

Magus lifted the shaft. The thin blade cut across the sky above them.

“Will you fight?”

Marle caught her bow. The curve of the wood was familiar. Two arrows remained behind her shoulder. It would take little time to draw one. She could even decide where to aim: his face, or his chest.

Her hand fell away.

“No.”

The anger did not lessen once she had said it. She pressed her nails into her palm.

“Would killing you bring Crono back?”

Magus did not answer.

“Then I won't. Not now.”

Lucca came to stand beside her, then half a step ahead. She had not drawn her gun either.

“We've heard your story. You can tell Frog yourself.”

His eyes narrowed. Lucca turned away. Marle placed her feet beside Lucca's tracks. Showing him her back frightened her. But if that fear made her reach for the bow again, she might never leave this rock.

As they stepped down, his voice followed.

“Find the Guru of Time.”

Lucca stopped first.

“What?”

“If there is a way to recover lost time, he will know it.”

Marle stepped back off the stone. She turned so quickly that her arrows knocked together.

“You mean Crono can come back?”

“I don't know.”

The answer came so quickly that her mouth closed.

“Ask him.”

“Where is he?”

“The Gurus were scattered, as Janus was. You found Melchior. From your flying machine, I assume you have found traces of Belthasar too. The Guru of Time is Gaspar.”

Lucca looked at Marle. Marle was thinking of a small light in the darkness. An old man leaning against a railing. Whatever age they returned from, he was always there.

They did not yet know if he had that name. At least they had somewhere to ask.

Magus put away his weapon and approached. Lucca's hand went to her waist.

“I'll come with you.”

“To help us?”

He looked past her at Marle.

“Lavos is still alive.”

Lucca did not move aside. Marle touched her arm. They looked at each other briefly. Marle did not say it would be all right. Lucca was not waiting for her to.

They walked apart. Magus neither passed them nor drew alongside. Each time Marle looked back, the black cloak followed at the same distance.

At the village, a child reached for the Epoch's wing until an adult caught his hand. Lucca climbed into the cockpit and checked the locks. Marle took a rear seat. Magus paused before the remaining one.

Marle was looking at it.

He sat. His weapon lay along the seat's edge. She shifted her bow from her knees toward the window so that the wood would not touch its shaft.

Lucca closed the canopy. This time the Epoch lifted cleanly. The village lights fell away. The sea came into view.

Far out, the surface rose.

Marle thought it was a wave. But the dark edge breaking through it did not subside. Water poured down a wall. More walls emerged, followed by a high tower. Lucca drew back on the controls, carrying them away from the enormous rising structure.

Marle pressed both hands to the glass.

They had come from down there. The breaking floor, the Mammon Machine's light, the place where Schala had stood—all of it had been inside those walls. Water streamed from the building's underside. Its foundations lifted clear of the sea.

The Ocean Palace hung in the air.

Magus leaned forward, bracing a hand beneath the window.

“The Black Omen.”

Marle did not ask whom he was speaking to. Light gathered above the structure and drove the low clouds aside. From here, she could not see who might still be alive within it.

Lucca's hand paused before the time controls.

Marle looked from her to the suspended palace. If she asked to go inside again, what would Lucca say first? Schala's name? Or what had happened there?

“Take us to the old man.”

Lucca nodded. Magus removed his hand from the window.

The light outside stretched into long bands. Marle brought the bow back onto her knees. As the Epoch entered time, the stranger's cloak brushed the back of her hand.

She moved her hand away.

[Chrono Trigger Novel - Episode 62] The Sky Reclaimed

Torn metal flapped in the wind. Marle crawled without stopping to clear the hair from her face. Where her feet had been, there was sky. Lucca still had a fistful of her collar.

The Epoch drew level with the wing.

Its canopy slid back. Dalton rose from the central seat, smoothed his hair, and spread his arms.

“Bow before the empire's new flagship! The Aero-Dalton Imperial!”

The wind tore at the name. Lucca's eyebrows rose, but Marle could not smile. Two strides would carry them to the smaller craft. There was nothing underneath those strides.

“Now you see who commands the—”

Lucca jumped.

Marle followed before she could draw breath. Metal vanished beneath her. Her bow struck her back; her knees struck the small extended wing. She caught the hull with both arms. One foot scraped empty air. Lucca seized her elbow and leaned backward.

Marle dragged herself up. Pain burned beneath her clothes. Her breath came out in a rough little gasp.

She could not stand. She scarcely dared lift her chest from the metal. The craft was moving with them now, carrying every part of her except the foot that still seemed to be searching for a ledge. She drew that foot in and pressed it hard against the hull.

Dalton looked from them to the abandoned wing. His mouth slowly closed.

“Who taught you to board another man's ship?”

Lucca drew her gun.

“Get out.”

He extended a hand. A sphere of iron formed in the air. Marle saw it coming but had nowhere to move. The impact rang through her ribs. Her grip loosened. The wing tilted beneath her back.

Lucca pinned her legs with one knee. Marle forced her nails into a seam. A gunshot cracked overhead; Dalton ducked behind the canopy.

The weight on her chest was gone. Her body still seemed to be holding it.

“Marle.”

“I've got hold.”

Saying it helped her tighten her hands. She drew her knees beneath her. Beside her, Lucca kept her gun ready and opened her other palm. Fire gathered between her fingers.

Flame licked through the cockpit. Dalton hunched his shoulders. His lips moved.

White specks caught on Lucca's sleeve. Marle thought they were snow until they hardened together. Ice enclosed Lucca's forearm. She bent it with a clenched jaw. The ice cracked without breaking, forcing the muzzle skyward.

“You won't catch me twice!”

Frost spread under Marle's feet. She gripped a metal loop in the hull. First she had to stay aboard. Hitting him, silencing that laugh—those would have to wait.

She gathered cold beneath her palm. Ice rose behind Dalton and fastened his coat to the seat.

He turned his wrist.

Fire rolled across the wing. Marle covered her face. Heat skimmed her knuckles; meltwater running along the hull turned hot. Lucca lay flat as orange flame streamed above them.

When it cleared, Marle took out her bow. She braced its lower limb between her knees and nocked an arrow, crushing the feathers with unsteady fingers. Dalton was picking ice from his coat.

She aimed at his shoulder.

He twisted. The arrow grazed his upper arm, clipped the cockpit rim, and vanished below. A scrap of torn cloth floated free. Marle flattened herself without checking the two arrows she had left.

Another iron sphere appeared.

This one struck Lucca.

Her glasses slid down her nose. Her gun rolled across the wing; Marle stopped it with a foot. Lucca's cheek lay against the hull. Her eyes were open.

“Lucca.”

Her fingers moved. Marle covered them with her own hand and gathered healing light, watching Dalton all the while. The trembling beneath her palm eased. Lucca propped herself on an elbow.

“Ice for fire,” she murmured. “Fire for your ice. He watches what we use.”

Dalton examined his torn sleeve. The craft held its course without him; both his hands were free. He ripped the loose cloth away. Marle curled her fingers around the fading light.

“What do we do?”

Lucca struck the ice around her arm against the cockpit rim. Fragments broke loose. She retrieved her gun and tucked it into her belt.

“Let me do it. Keep hold of me.”

Marle slung her bow and caught Lucca's belt. She wound the sturdy leather around her hand. The strap of Lucca's bag fluttered beside it.

“I've got you.”

Lucca rose. This time her fire stayed concentrated inside the canopy, climbing toward Dalton's hands and face. He cried out and flailed.

Cold light flashed back. Marle hauled Lucca down beside the hull. Ice struck her shoulder. She held the belt until Lucca opened her hand, then poured warmth through fingers too stiff to bend.

Dalton struggled out of the cockpit. A boot caught in the seat. The Epoch rocked as he pulled it free. Marle released the belt and grabbed the seam.

Dalton stopped too. The sea passed beneath his feet.

For a moment nobody moved. Wind brushed the wings. The craft hummed. Marle could hear her breathing so clearly that she thought he must hear it too.

He raised a hand.

Lucca's fire reached him first.

His back struck the canopy. Whatever had been gathering at his fingertips dispersed. He gasped. This time he could not immediately summon a laugh. An ember fell from his sleeve.

“Here? I can't—”

He looked toward the Blackbird, its enormous wing blotting out the sky behind them. Darkness folded between his outstretched hands.

“Come out! Get rid of them!”

Nothing answered from the opening.

Dalton thrust his face toward it. Marle remembered the giant flattened against the wing. She saw no reason to tell him.

The opening widened. His sleeve snapped inward. He tried to withdraw his arm and pitched forward instead. His free hand caught the canopy, but his fingers slipped, one by one.

He shouted. His boots kicked once in the air and disappeared into darkness.

The opening closed.

Marle stared. There was no sound of a fall, no splash. Not even a mark remained where his hand had gripped the canopy.

The Epoch tilted.

Lucca climbed into the cockpit and reached back. Marle caught her hand and tumbled between the seats, striking her knees on the floor. The canopy closed. The wind fell so abruptly silent that she thought she had gone deaf.

In the central seat, Lucca studied the controls. A handle projected from the side of the panel. It had not been there before. She pulled it.

A beam shot from the bow.

The Blackbird's wing split open.

Lucca's hand froze. The great vessel began to list, shedding dark fragments from its broken wingtip. As its hull descended, Marle thought of the narrow passages inside. The locked storeroom. She leaned forward with a hand against the glass.

“Can we go back?”

Lucca moved another control. The Epoch lurched, knocking Marle's forehead against the window. Lucca eased the lever back. The sea dropped lower in their view.

The Blackbird struck the water.

Spray filled the window. The Epoch was shoved sideways. Marle gripped a handle and waited for the water to fall. A wing appeared first, then the back of the ship. Both sank from sight. Water surged outward in widening circles.

Lucca was biting her lip. Marle could say nothing. To descend, they would have to move the controls again. Beyond the glass, every patch of water looked equally dark.

They circled once. Lucca slowed the craft. Marle searched among floating splinters for people but could distinguish nothing from this height. When Lucca tried to bring them lower, the hull shuddered. She closed both hands around the controls.

Marle withdrew to a rear seat. Torn cloth lay on the seat beside her: a piece of Dalton's coat. She pushed it onto the floor. Her hand started to settle on the empty cushion, then returned to her knee.

There was room to spread her things out. She could have put her bow there, or Lucca's heavy bag. Instead she kept the bow close against her legs and watched Lucca's hands. Neither of them spoke while the craft completed its turn toward shore.

It took a while to find land.

The Epoch bounced twice in the snow beyond the village. Lucca did not let go until it had stopped completely. The canopy opened, admitting cold air. Marle climbed out. The ground was still, yet her knees kept bending beneath her.

People came out of the houses. Someone asked about Dalton. Lucca shook her head. Someone else asked whether the Blackbird would return. This time Marle shook hers. When she tried to put words together, she could only see the water closing.

A woman settled them beside a fire and brought a bowl of water. Marle accepted it with both hands. Its warmth hurt her fingers.

“There's someone on the northern cape,” the woman said, looking at Marle's wet clothes. “A man dressed in black. Won't turn around when you call. I wondered if he was with you.”

Marle looked at Lucca without putting down the bowl.

Lucca was already looking back.

The water was still trembling between Marle's hands.
